All Kiddie Aside

Here’s a project that’s now in its third year and has been written about by many, but I haven’t seen anything on it recently. It’s called Kiddie Records Weekly, Classics from the Golden Age. You can read the description of the site by clicking on the link, but in brief, it began as a one year project, where they would upload a Children’s Record from the 40’s and 50’s once a week that you could either listen to or download. When it began, they were going to be taken down after a certain period of time. Well, the longer the project went on, the longer they extended it. It is now described as a three year project and the entire archive is still on line, so if you are just finding out about it now, you can go back and catch up on everything you’ve missed.

The reason I’m writing about it now is that next week’s entry (which is actually this week’s entry a week late) has two records that will be of interest to most folks that read this blog.

Tom Terrific and Ruff and Reddy

It’s called Golden Records Singles and includes the two titles above plus Mister Ed and My Favorite Martian. The Tom Terrific record features Lionel Wilson, the original voice of Tom and Mighty Manfred… and everyone else on that series as well. Since these records were made in New York, as were Terrytoons, they were able to get the original voice, unlike the Ruff and Reddy record, which has the standard Golden Record voice artists doing their sometimes-not-so-good impressions of people we love, like Daws Butler and Don Messick. If you click on the picture above, it will take you directly to the page where you can see the other cover art, but it won’t be available for download until March 12.  So, finish your vegetables before that or no records for you!
